There’s nothing that compares to enjoying the warm weather in your backyard. The feeling of sun on your face, the sight of a beautifully landscaped yard, and a comfortable place to rest and socialize with friends and family can be yours to enjoy. Realizing this vision can take a little—or a lot—of effort, depending on your plans. However, it’s often worth the trouble to gain access to a whole new outdoor living space.

Why Remodel Your Outdoor Living Space

The main reason for creating an outdoor living area is to make better use of your yard. If you never seem to use your yard, think about what’s stopping you. Also consider your hobbies and what you like to do when you’re at home. How could your property support these interests?

Maybe your family and social life are prompting you to consider an upgrade. If you host parties and family gatherings at your home, a deck or patio, outdoor kitchen, barbeque space, or fire pit might appeal. Maybe your kids are begging for a half basketball court, or you’ve always dreamed of installing a pool. Gardeners may wish for a more functional, attractive space to grow their favorite plants with raised beds, a greenhouse, and drip irrigation.

There’s no question that landscaped, livable outdoor space adds value to your property. Even if you’re not planning on selling soon, it will be closer to show-ready with some yard upgrades. With this in mind, you might temper your enthusiasm for hyper-custom looks with a practical eye as to what might interest future buyers.

The Planning Process

Start by getting accurate measurements of your yard so you understand what’s possible in your space. The size may put some dreams out of reach or make you change your plans. If you’re planning on doing a lot of planting, you’ll also want to understand how much sun your yard gets and the state of your soil.

Then, decide how you want to take advantage of your yard. Here’s where you might enlist the whole family to come up with ideas or discuss options. Talk about what everyone does in their free time and how reinventing the yard might support these activities.

Think about your neighborhood and the style of your house to narrow down what to invest in for your property. Put together a wish list to mull over while you investigate the cost and feasibility of the various choices. This is the time to sort out your budget limitations before your imagination carries you away.

Take a hard look at how your yard appears now. Are there features of its present state you want to preserve or reconfigure? Maybe you have beds of perennial flowers you’d like to keep, or an arbor you don’t want to disturb.

Next, sketch out a few rudimentary designs. Map out the major design features like flower beds, decks, trees, patios, sheds, fences, pools, and footpaths. Consider the current foot traffic flow and any impediments to maintenance—for example, if your main water source is near the house, you may not want to situate raised beds at the back of the yard. You can use digital tools to help: Canva offers a free landscape plan builder, or you could try using an AI chatbot like ChatGPT or Claude to draw up suggestions. Alternatively, working with a design professional could be your best bet.

Being a Good Neighbor

Depending on what you envision, you may have to seek approvals from local government. Constructing a deck could require a permit and inspections, for instance. Property line setbacks and other zoning laws may also apply. If you have a homeowners’ association, check with them to find out if there are any rules that might affect your plans.

In addition to following regulations, consider how your plans might impact your neighbors. For example, you might want to plant a row of trees, a bamboo wall, or a hedge for more privacy.

You can also explore nearby streets to see what other homeowners have done with their yard space. Are there improvements that inspire you? If you find a renovation that’s particularly appealing, there might be an opportunity to ask a neighbor to recommend their contractor.

Getting the Job Done

Unless you have the skills to complete your backyard remodel or can call on the expertise of friends and family, expect to hire a professional. Take your time with this step. By doing thorough research, checking contractors’ credentials, and getting solid recommendations from people you trust, you’ll come up with a list of potential candidates.

Have multiple contractors visit your property and discuss your plans and budget—don’t contact only one. When going over ideas with them, you’ll learn what’s feasible and what other options they may suggest. Reputable contractors will be able to advise you on how to proceed with any approvals.

Find out each company’s availability and get a quote in writing. Determine if there’s a portion of the work you could do yourself to reduce the final cost. You may also want to build your desired outdoor living area in stages; for example, you might put in a covered patio now and install a hot tub later. Review the possibilities and estimates and make your decision.

With some research, planning, and legwork to find the right contractor, the yard of your dreams is not far off.
